Broadband technology is revolutionising Aged Care – don’t be left behind.

Australia’s aged care population is growing rapidly, placing an enormous strain on the sector to accommodate new residents. Broadband technology is the solution to this challenge, helping elderly Australians live longer while giving them more independence and choice. It’s also making life easier for providers, by enabling them to do more with less, to communicate more efficiently, and better interpret their data. It’s crucial for providers to jump on board with the latest technologies, or they’ll face being left behind. Robotics, science and eHealth are only going to become more and more important. To remain relevant in the future, setting up infrastructure that doesn’t only accommodate the innovations of today, but also those of tomorrow, is imperative. Here are just a few ways internet technology is revolutionising the aged care sector at this very moment:

Quality of life

Broadband technologies are already enhancing residents’ social connectivity. They can now enjoy video calls with their loved ones, which provides a chance to connect face-to-face, bridging the distances between families. This has a huge impact on residents’ state of mind, helping to reduce loneliness and increase overall happiness. Plus, internet technologies have also already started giving residents more choice in their day-to-day lifestyles. Thanks to wearable technologies and more devices being connected to the internet, day-to-day activities can now be customised based on the needs and lifestyle preference of the individual. Residents can now live on their own schedule, giving them greater freedom and independence, even as their care needs increase with age.

Quality of Care

As more and more objects become connected to the Internet of Things, healthcare appliances are becoming even more intelligent. This has created some exciting opportunities to improve care. Residents’ rooms are becoming active health hubs: residents can video-call their doctors from the comfort of their rooms. Providers can currently access all kinds of information about the resident, from their temperature to medicine intake, activity level and heart rate, and you can monitor and track this remotely across the facility. Any changes or abnormal behaviours can be discovered as they emerge. This can be fast, helping save lives in emergencies, and it can also be slow, picking up gradual deterioration that might have otherwise gone under the radar. This is only going to improve as more and more appliances join the Internet of Things, which is likely to lead to better reporting and even faster diagnosis in the future.

Better performance

The latest broadband technologies are also helping facilities become more productive, efficient, and profitable so that they can deliver the better quality of care to a greater number of residents. Providers can streamline processes through better data analysis and monitoring, allowing them to make more informed business decisions. Meanwhile, the dream of end-to-end care management is now being realised, and staff are no longer burdened by as much admin, thanks to mobile and tablet technologies. This has freed up more time for them to provide care, as opposed to being bogged down by admin. Plus, network technology is becoming more sustainable, offering smoother migration to solutions of the future. This will eliminate the need for core refurbishment, so residents can age in place, without having to move as their care requirements change.

The NCIS group, one of NSW’s leading providers of GPON network infrastructure has recently expanded to new corporate offices in Perth, WA. The new West Coast headquarters will accommodate rapid demand for GPON services, particularly in the emerging aged care and hospitality sectors of the region.

“We’re feeding organic growth across the country. Other states and territories have seen the success of our innovative solutions being rolled out in NSW and QLD, and now want to adapt these technologies for themselves,” says NCIS Managing Director, Dean Beaumont.

“Our branding, name, exposure and solutions are now attracting interstate clients and we’re having to grow our business to meet these demands.”

Western Australia is currently coming off the mining boom and to compensate, Perth and its surrounds have entered a construction phase. With the focus on development, the West Coast of Australia is open to implementing new technologies in these industry sectors, especially those with economic growth potential. As a result, many organisations are looking to develop their infrastructure.

“Now’s the time for technological expansion in WA. Companies in Perth are looking for innovation to help them with their bids and they want smarter ways of doing more with less. With the dust settling from the mining boom, they’re resource-starved and need something to pull them up economically,” says Dean.

Aged care is in a growth vertical Australia-wide due to the aging population. NCIS is currently meeting these demands, offering network infrastructure capable of improving the efficiency of facilities, while enhancing quality of life and care.

“Providing scalable infrastructure to the booming aged care industry is crucial right now. Installing and developing this infrastructure for facilities provides aging Australians with better quality of care and lifestyle, which is very important to us,” says Murrie Downing, NCIS’ Director of Sales & Marketing.

“It’s an exciting new phase for NCIS. The next step will be to continue growing our team there. We’re currently searching for more candidates.”

The NCIS group already has a huge range of new Aged Care and Hotel projects in the pipeline for WA.

All business owners are aware that downtime is detrimental to productivity, but few recognise the true extent to which it can harm their organisation. It’s important to remember that downtime can affect your business far more than that actual hours your network is physically down, impacting larger, big picture things like retention, profits and growth potential. Here are four areas where downtime has been known to harm businesses:

1. Productivity

When downtime strikes, usually the first thing to be affected is productivity. Immediately, staff are unable to do their jobs properly, leading to inefficiencies, a higher chance of errors and often, panic. Think about it – if you have 100 staff relying on your server, one day of downtime means 800 hours of compromised productivity – a severe financial loss. Plus, this has also been known to affect company morale. People like to leave work feeling like they’ve worked hard and achieved something in their day. When they don’t, many feel frustrated, annoyed and stressed. Remember – an unsatisfied team is an unproductive one, which is why efficient infrastructure is key to productivity.

2. Repair and compensation

When you’re experiencing downtime, the fastest and most effective solution to getting you back up and running is not usually the cheapest. For example; trying to organize professional help on short notice is expensive and time-consuming. Plus, to catch up on lost productivity, staff are often stuck doing work outside of scheduled hours, leading to additional overtime expenses. These costs are taken straight out of profit margins, leaving businesses unable to invest in new ventures that could help them grow. By cutting out these additional expenses, installing quality communications infrastructure will pay for itself in the long run.

3. Customer experience

In today’s extremely competitive market, customer experience is everything. When service is efficient, we perceive brands to run with equal efficiency, leading to improved trust and heightened customer retention. On the other hand, when service is slow, we tend to feel negatively about the whole organization, leading to poor retention and loss of clients. Downtime harms customer experience, leaving consumers feeling dissatisfied and unloved, straining relationships with customers that may have taken years to build.

4. Future opportunities

While reliable communications networks might have a price tag, the opportunity costs of downtime are even more expensive. Companies that constantly experience communications issues struggle to meet demands, harming opportunities to grow and innovate in the long run. On the other hand, companies with sustainable network infrastructure enjoy greater productivity and efficiency across their organisation, placing them in a better position to innovate, grow and tackle business challenges with confidence.

The built environment is currently the world’s largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Why not make 2018 the year your business becomes more environmentally sustainable by investing in GPON? Fibre optic technology can greatly reduce the harm you leave on the planet, being fully recyclable, using 80% less copper and 70% less power than a traditional network. Plus, aside from your environmental footprint, having a sustainable facility will also benefit your organisation in many other ways, from increasing the value of your facility to reducing the costs of running it. Here are some key reasons to invest in sustainable fibre infrastructure in 2018:

Gain competitive advantage
Research shows that consumers and investors are more environmentally conscious than ever before, with this trend likely to increase in 2018. Achieving a high Green Star environmental rating is a big advantage in a crowded marketplace, helping set you apart from the competition. Studies show that doing good by the environment will do a lot of good for your business. It can give employees a greater sense of purpose, improving your workflow and naturally creating a favourable brand image for clients. This is likely to improve your likability and eventually, your overall value as an organisation.

Boost your productivity
Environmentally friendly networks are far more productive and efficient. This is because they eliminate the issue of duplication – when multiple networks are installed on the same premises, compromising speed, workspace and time. By consolidating all of this onto one energy efficient network, environmentally friendly infrastructure can provide a big operational boost. With bandwidth speeds up to nine times faster and far less interruptions, a GPON is far more productive, providing greater network security and exciting new usage opportunities. Plus, it will also adapt to a growing user capacity as your organisation expands over time.

Reduce your running costs
While switching to sustainable communications infrastructure might come at an additional cost, it will save you plenty in the long run. An environmentally friendly network uses far less power, which means a much cheaper electrical bill. Plus, by consolidating your infrastructure into one simplified, high-quality fibre network you’ll be less susceptible to internet outages and the hefty repair bills that accompany this. With a sustainable network, you’ll have more savings to invest in innovation and growth.
